Alien & Predator Robots Attack Gadget Show

robo_steel_alien_queen_by_mseckington

The recent The Gadget Show Live exhibition in Birmingham, England featured some familiar, only more mechanized, versions of some well know movie monstrosities. I didn’t make it, but I imagine in large-scale splendor, these guys must have been a spectacle to see. These guys are made by the Irish company Robo robo_steel_predator_by_mseckingtonSteel. Believe it or not, these amazing sculptures are for sale. A 2.4 meter/350 kg Alien Queen will run you 4,500 Euros (about $5,820 USD), while the 2 meter high/350 kg Predator is a mere 3,500 Euros (appx. $4528 USD). Also for sale from Robo Steel are several Transformer sculptures, as well as versions of Wall-E, some Star Wars Characters and an Alien King (king?) among other items. They also offer several table-top sized sculptures for those of us with less shelf space.

Mechanisms of Terra

According to usually reliable sources, on May 1st, the Earth will tragically be destroyed. However, all is not lost. It seems there’s a nice little planet called Terra available for occupation– just as soon as we can exterminate the surprisingly defensive, if cute alien race that lives there.

Winged Craft
The Terrans have some impressive, if not too threatening vehicles at their disposal. Their open-style aircraft hark back to the Wright Brothers plane, but with much greater altitude and maneuverability. Apparently the devices are so quite you can sneak up on a flying whale.

Flying Canoes
Early intell also tells us they have some interesting flying boat-like craft that resemble elegant canoes with long and graceful oars. These devices don’t appear too threatening either.

Walkers
The Terrans’ single-pilot land walkers could prove formitable in a land battle, though. The four-legged craft appear quite frisky and could harbor weapons.

Cross-Wing Fighter
Still, our planet has a long and glorious history of invading and conquoring far-away races that were just minding their own business, so I’d say our guys have an excellent chance against these big-eyed cuties. With great squadrens of our sleek new cross-wing fighters (not to be confused with “x-wing” fighters), we should easily defeat the natives. While the complete specs on this babies is still hush-hush, released action images reveal dual rocket launchers close to the hull under the wings and an ability to fly in tight formation.

Find out for yourself the fate of this culture clash this may when big-screen 3D war footage of the Battle for Terra becomes available in local theaters.

Giant Robots Attack Manhatten!

A bunch of giant robots that flew into town in the guise of futuristic aircraft this morning, then set upon terrorizing the citizenry. If not for the heroic efforts of Sky Captain, our great city may have been reduced to rubble. This is not to say all is well, however. At the same time this was going on, a gigantic ape recently brought in for a Broadway exhibit by legendary adventurer/moviemaker Carl Denhem rampages through the city. It had made it’s way to the top of the Empire State Building carrying Anne Darrow, an unwilling victim. Army airplanes and other local forces were busy trying to get that darned ape off the Empire, leaving the rest of the city vulnerable to attack. It was a day not soon to be forgotten in old New York.

Great Reissues: Forbidden Planet & Star Trek

model_reissues
Wow! This is BIG! What may be the three most desired discontinued model kits produced in recent years are about to be reissued (”hurrays” are in order).  Polar Lights is reissuing it’s much sought-after Robby the Robot Kit,  as well as it’s two jumbo/hyper-detailed spaceship icons, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A from the Star Trek films  and Starcruiser C-57D from Forbidden Planet.

The 1/350th scale Enterprise kit is  35″ long, comes with complete aztecing decals, includes 3 interior sections, and can be assembled as either the “A” or the refit versions.

Even more interior detail is included with the Starcruiser C-57D kit. This one has to be seen to be appreciated. the saucer is a whopping 28″ in diameter (maybe turn it into a chadalier?).  At 1/72 scale, it includes a choice of domes (clear or opaque) and has a detailed interior featuring the control area and crew’s quarters. It also comes with a 1/72 scale Robby, of course, but if you didn’t get one the first time, Polar Light’s classic Robby model is a required aquisition for the serious movie machine  modeler.  At 1/12 scale, he is 8″ tall and comes with the classic clear dome, packed with all those cute little Robby parts.

I picked up my Robby a few years ago, but I think it’s time to make room for a couple of big starships.

CultTVMan is taking preorders:
U.S.S. Enterprise™ NCC-1701-A, May 2009 release
Robby the Robot, May 2009 release
Starcruiser C-57, September 2009 release

I’m pulling for the home team.  Monsters vs. Aliens is a new animated feature from Dreamworks Animation looks like another fun ride of the Monsters, Inc. variety.
