Predator planet

Last December’s Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem finally brought Aliens (and their Predators) to cozy small town America. Amidst the usual gory rough stuff are some interesting Predator tech to watch for on DVD:

  • We see the Predator planet (or off-world base) with Predator architecture
  • A musket-like Predator pistol figures prominently in the story
  • 2 different Predator spacecraft (including the one from AVP)
  • More weapons than I immediately recall

I was one of the apparent minority who thoroughly dug AVP. I thought Requiem (which begins where AVP ended) was a great follow up and a concept I’d been waiting a couple of decades to see. Don’t even think there won’t be a third.

Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Unrated Edition) $16.99 at Amazon.com
Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Extreme Unrated Set) [Blu-ray] $26.95 at Amazon.com
Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Two-Disc Special Edition with Digital Copy) $22.99 at Amazon.com
Alien Triple Pack (Alien / Aliens / Alien 3) $23.99 at Amazon.com
Predator [Blu-ray]$27.95 at Amazon

Poster: Houdini in The Master Mystery

Houdini: The Movie Star (Three Disc Collection), $29.95 at Amazon

Harry Houdini may have invented a demand for the movie machine even before there were movies with his cinematic-like public exploits. His live acts quenched the public thirst for suspense in much the same way movies do today. It was only natural for the master magician to make the transision into film. Here is a great collection of Houdini’s foray into fictional film. Titles include: The Master Mystery (1919, 238m, Color Tinted) Terror Island (1920, 55m, B&W) The Man from Beyond (1922, 68m, Color Tinted) Haldane of the Secret Service (1923, 84m, Color Tinted), and The Grim Game (Fragment, 1919, 5m, Color Tinted). Extras include doc footage of filmed escapes, and more.

Doctor Who - The Time Warrior (Episode 70), $18.99 at Amazon

Step out of the Tardis into the early 1970s with The Doctor #3, played by Jon Pertwee on his nineth multi-episode story to be released in region 1 DVD. The Dr. and Sara Jane encounter the big-headed Sontaren, Linx, for plenty of low-budget sci-fi tech fun.

This episode of particular intererst to fans of the current Who series. Word from the BBC is that the Sontarens are coming back to bother the current Doctor next season (the photo above is pretty good evidence of that!).
